NIU men get upset win at Dayton: Saturday’s Daily Chronicle sports roundup — Libertyville Sports news

Men’s basketball NIU 81, Dayton 76 (OT) : At Dayton, David Douglas Jr. scored 27 points and Max Weisbrod added 19 as the Huskies beat the Flyers and picked up the first win of the Matt Majkrzak era. “What makes me the most proud is how we did it,” Majkrzak said. “I know our offense is going to be good this year, but the concerns could be rebounding and defense. We go plus-14 (rebounding) on a pretty tough-minded, strong Dayton program, and we go to overtime after the brutal travel week we had and we found a way to persevere and win the game. Bennett Basich hit a triple to begin the overtime and, after Dayton scored the next four to go back in front by one, NIU (1-2) used a 6-2 spurt to take a 76-73 lead. Douglas and Weisbrod both made a pair of free throws and Basich made a layup as the Huskies led by three with 1:40 to go. Following a free throw from Dayton, both teams had an empty possession as NIU got the ball back with under a minute to play. Weisbrod buried a triple with 22 seconds left as the NIU lead grew to 79-74 and Basich sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with four seconds left. Boys bowling Sycamore Kickoff Classic : At Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb, freshman Tyler Royalty rolled a 1,229 to place 12th overall with a 236 high game. Teddy Grych rolled a 1,220 to take 13th with a 223 high game. Girls swimming St. Charles East Sectional : At St. Charles, the season came to an end for the DeKalb-Sycamore swim team.
